This tour provides a comprehensive introduction to the story of the Vatican territory and papal power through the visit of the Vatican Art Collection and S. Peter Basilica. The tour starts with an overview of the Vatican cemetery and the reasons for building a fortress to protect the memorial church of S. Peter, built over the tomb of the Apostle in 333 AD. The visit to early Christian tombs and the magnificent Picture Gallery with masterpieces by Giotto, Raffaello, Leonardo and Caravaggiowill provide the grounds for understanding the symbology of the Sistine Chapel.

The tour follows to the statuary collections and in particular the finest of 1500: the ancient sculpture trove of Julius II, the dream of any artist for centuries. You will then cross the Upper Galleries with statues, tapestries and painted maps illustrating the expanding influence of the Catholic Church in arts and diplomacy. At this point, you will have the tools to understand and fully appreciate the meaning and beauty of Botticelli’s fresco paintings, Michelangelo’s ceiling and Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel.

The last part of the tour covers S. Peter Basilica, the biggest church in the world and the symbolic centre of Catholicism, visiting breathtaking masterpieces as Michelangelo’s statue of the Pietà, the Dome as well as the bronze Canopy and the Square designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini.
