Established as a protected forest in 1955 and later designated as a landscape forest, Auttiköngäs now proudly stands as part of Northern Finland’s old-growth forest protection program. Its ancient forests, untouched by organized logging, can be rightfully classified as primary or virgin forest. The area’s historical significance extends to the days of the Continuation War (1941-44), when German soldiers, stationed at Autti, felled trees for fortification purposes.
